Blown-In Attic Insulation
Blown-in attic insulation spreads an even layer over the entire attic floor, around wires and trusses, while a clean existing layer stays in place.
How it works and what it costs
Room over garage insulation warms the bedroom or bonus room above an attached garage by sealing and insulating its floor, its short side walls and the slope overhead.
These rooms are common in two-story Barrhaven homes. The garage below is unheated, the short attic spaces on each side are cold, and the room ends up several degrees colder than the hall outside its door.
There are three weak spots. The floor sits over the garage ceiling, where the insulation between the joists often has gaps or has fallen away. The knee walls, the short walls on each side of the room, often have batts with no air barrier behind them. The sloped ceiling is a shallow space with little room for depth.
The work fixes each of these in turn, and the visit checks all three before the quote is written.
The floor is often the biggest loss. We seal the rim joist area and the gaps between the joists where cold garage air flows in, then fill the joist bays with dense insulation. Sealing the open ends of the joist bays stops garage air from flowing under the room.
Knee walls get sealed at the top and bottom and covered on the attic side so the batts stay tight against the drywall. The flat attic above and the sloped sections get topped up with loose fill, with baffles where the roof vents run. The cathedral ceiling insulation page covers slopes that have no attic above them.
In Ontario, this work usually costs $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot of the room's floor area. How much of the floor, walls and ceiling need attention sets the final number.

These jobs are often quoted together, because the same visit and the same crew can handle them in one trip to the attic.

How it works and what it costs
R-60 attic insulation is our usual target for Barrhaven attics: a deep, even layer over a sealed ceiling.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation removal vacuums out wet, dirty or flattened material, leaving a bare floor that can be sealed and filled again from scratch.
How it works and what it costs
Attic air sealing plugs the gaps in the ceiling so warm house air stays downstairs, and it happens on every job before anything new goes on top.
How it works and what it costs
Attic ventilation moves outside air in at the soffits and out near the ridge, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter and less hot in summer.
How it works and what it costs
Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the rafters above a sloped or vaulted ceiling, a closed space too tight for loose fill to be spread across.
How it works and what it costs
The attic insulation rebate from Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program covers a share of an attic upgrade, with the payment tied to the R-value the attic has before work begins.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation cost in Barrhaven depends on the attic's floor area, the depth you add, the sealing needed and whether old material comes out first.
How it works and what it costsThe visit sorts it out. We look at the whole attic and recommend only the work it needs.
