Blown-In Attic Insulation
Blown-in attic insulation spreads an even layer over the entire attic floor, around wires and trusses, while a clean existing layer stays in place.
How it works and what it costs
Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the rafters above a sloped or vaulted ceiling, a closed space too tight for loose fill to be spread across.
Great rooms, lofts and bedrooms with vaulted ceilings are found in many detached Barrhaven homes and in the larger houses around Manotick and Greely. They are often the warmest rooms in summer and the coldest in winter, because the insulation inside the slope is thin.
The gap from drywall up to roof sheathing is only as deep as the rafters, often 8 to 12 inches. That leaves less room for insulation than an open attic, and a vented roof still needs an air space above the insulation.
Cathedral ceiling insulation has to make the most of a small space. That means a material with a high R-value per inch, a sealed ceiling below it and a clear vent path above it.
When the drywall is coming down for a renovation, spray foam or dense batts can fill the rafters from below. When the drywall stays, dense-packed cellulose can be blown into each rafter cavity from small holes drilled in the drywall. When a new roof is going on, rigid foam can be added on top of the roof boards.
We look at the rafters, the vents, the drywall and any signs of leaks before recommending one. The method and the R-value it reaches are both written into the quote.
Pot lights in a sloped ceiling leak warm air straight into the roof framing, which can lead to moisture on the roof boards. We seal or cover them before the new insulation goes in. The attic air sealing page explains how.
In Ontario, cathedral ceiling insulation is typically $3.50 to $7.00 per square foot. The method chosen and whether the drywall comes down set the price.

These jobs are often quoted together, because the same visit and the same crew can handle them in one trip to the attic.

How it works and what it costs
R-60 attic insulation is our usual target for Barrhaven attics: a deep, even layer over a sealed ceiling.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation removal vacuums out wet, dirty or flattened material, leaving a bare floor that can be sealed and filled again from scratch.
How it works and what it costs
Attic air sealing plugs the gaps in the ceiling so warm house air stays downstairs, and it happens on every job before anything new goes on top.
How it works and what it costs
Attic ventilation moves outside air in at the soffits and out near the ridge, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter and less hot in summer.
How it works and what it costs
Room over garage insulation warms the bedroom or bonus room above an attached garage by sealing and insulating its floor, its short side walls and the slope overhead.
How it works and what it costs
The attic insulation rebate from Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program covers a share of an attic upgrade, with the payment tied to the R-value the attic has before work begins.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation cost in Barrhaven depends on the attic's floor area, the depth you add, the sealing needed and whether old material comes out first.
How it works and what it costsThe visit sorts it out. We look at the whole attic and recommend only the work it needs.
