Blown-In Attic Insulation
Blown-in attic insulation spreads an even layer over the entire attic floor, around wires and trusses, while a clean existing layer stays in place.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation removal vacuums out wet, dirty or flattened material, leaving a bare floor that can be sealed and filled again from scratch.
Not every attic needs it. A clean, dry layer is kept and added into the final depth. Material that is mouldy, full of droppings, soaked by a roof leak or smelly is cleared first.
Mouse tunnels and droppings in the layer are the most common reason. Dark stains or clumps show where water has dripped from the roof or a loose fan duct. A musty smell at the hatch points to mould. Insulation that has been walked flat during wiring work also gives little value.
We show you photos of what we find, and the quote explains why attic insulation removal is or is not needed in your house.
A wide vacuum hose runs from our truck outside, through the hatch and into the attic. The old material is pulled straight into bags in the truck, which keeps the stairs and halls clear. The hatch area is closed off and the floors along the way are covered.
With the floor stripped, every ceiling leak is in plain view. That makes it the ideal moment to seal, and every opening is closed before refilling. The attic air sealing page lists them.
Vermiculite looks like small grey-brown or gold pebbles. Some older vermiculite contains asbestos, so it stays untouched until a sample has been sent to a lab. If the result shows asbestos, a specialist abatement company takes it out under Ontario's asbestos regulation, and our refill begins once the attic is clear.
In Ontario, attic insulation removal usually runs about $1.50 to $3.25 a square foot, and removal with a full refill often comes to $3.20 to $5.80 a square foot. The quote shows the removal, the sealing and the new R-60 attic insulation as separate lines.

These jobs are often quoted together, because the same visit and the same crew can handle them in one trip to the attic.

How it works and what it costs
R-60 attic insulation is our usual target for Barrhaven attics: a deep, even layer over a sealed ceiling.
How it works and what it costs
Attic air sealing plugs the gaps in the ceiling so warm house air stays downstairs, and it happens on every job before anything new goes on top.
How it works and what it costs
Attic ventilation moves outside air in at the soffits and out near the ridge, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter and less hot in summer.
How it works and what it costs
Room over garage insulation warms the bedroom or bonus room above an attached garage by sealing and insulating its floor, its short side walls and the slope overhead.
How it works and what it costs
Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the rafters above a sloped or vaulted ceiling, a closed space too tight for loose fill to be spread across.
How it works and what it costs
The attic insulation rebate from Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program covers a share of an attic upgrade, with the payment tied to the R-value the attic has before work begins.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation cost in Barrhaven depends on the attic's floor area, the depth you add, the sealing needed and whether old material comes out first.
How it works and what it costsThe visit sorts it out. We look at the whole attic and recommend only the work it needs.
