Blown-In Attic Insulation
Blown-in attic insulation spreads an even layer over the entire attic floor, around wires and trusses, while a clean existing layer stays in place.
How it works and what it costs
Attic ventilation moves outside air in at the soffits and out near the ridge, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter and less hot in summer.
Good attic ventilation needs clear soffit vents, a path for air above the insulation and enough exhaust at the top. Deep attic insulation can block that path at the eaves, so every top-up we do includes a check of the attic ventilation.
Baffles are stiff channels fastened between rafters right above the soffits. They keep insulation away from the vents and hold open a channel beneath the sheathing for air to rise. Without them, a fresh layer of loose fill slides into the eaves and smothers the vents.
Each vented rafter space gets its own baffle before any insulation is blown, so attic ventilation keeps working once the new layer is in.
Homes facing the fields at the south edge of Barrhaven and out toward Richmond and North Gower take a lot of wind. It pours in through the soffits and shoves loose insulation back from the outside walls, leaving bare drywall along the eaves. The rooms then feel cold beside the exterior walls.
Baffles stop the wind from reaching the insulation while keeping attic ventilation open. They also hold the layer at full depth right out to the edge of the house, where the roof sits lowest.
A bath fan that empties into the attic rather than outside dumps moist air exactly where attic ventilation is meant to keep things dry. We check every fan duct, connect loose ones and run them to an outside vent. The attic air sealing page covers sealing the fan housings at the ceiling.
Baffles are usually included in a top-up quote. Other attic ventilation work, such as adding roof vents or rerouting fan ducts, is priced per item and often adds $250 to $1,000 to a job in Ontario.

These jobs are often quoted together, because the same visit and the same crew can handle them in one trip to the attic.

How it works and what it costs
R-60 attic insulation is our usual target for Barrhaven attics: a deep, even layer over a sealed ceiling.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation removal vacuums out wet, dirty or flattened material, leaving a bare floor that can be sealed and filled again from scratch.
How it works and what it costs
Attic air sealing plugs the gaps in the ceiling so warm house air stays downstairs, and it happens on every job before anything new goes on top.
How it works and what it costs
Room over garage insulation warms the bedroom or bonus room above an attached garage by sealing and insulating its floor, its short side walls and the slope overhead.
How it works and what it costs
Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the rafters above a sloped or vaulted ceiling, a closed space too tight for loose fill to be spread across.
How it works and what it costs
The attic insulation rebate from Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program covers a share of an attic upgrade, with the payment tied to the R-value the attic has before work begins.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation cost in Barrhaven depends on the attic's floor area, the depth you add, the sealing needed and whether old material comes out first.
