Blown-In Attic Insulation
Blown-in attic insulation spreads an even layer over the entire attic floor, around wires and trusses, while a clean existing layer stays in place.
How it works and what it costs
Attic air sealing plugs the gaps in the ceiling so warm house air stays downstairs, and it happens on every job before anything new goes on top.
This is the part of the work that most people never see. It takes place on the attic floor, under where the insulation will sit, and it is the reason a top-up actually feels different in the rooms below.
Insulation holds back heat, but air passes easily through loose fibres. A ceiling with open holes keeps leaking warm, moist air into the attic no matter how deep the layer is. Attic air sealing stops that flow. Once the floor is buried under 20 inches of insulation, those holes are almost impossible to reach, which is why the sealing has to happen first.
The old layer is moved aside and each opening is sealed with the material that suits it.
Foam goes into the wire and pipe holes in the plates on top of interior walls. The plumbing stack and the chimney or furnace flue get fire-rated sealant and metal flashing around the hot pipe. Bathroom fan housings get sealed to the drywall, and their ducts get checked so they vent outdoors. Pot lights get airtight covers or sealing at the ceiling. The hatch is weatherstripped and topped with a board of rigid foam.
Newer Barrhaven homes can have thirty or more pot lights and a closet hatch that was never weatherstripped. Sealing around those lights and the hatch frame often makes the biggest change in comfort, even before any insulation is added.
Attic air sealing is normally quoted as one price for the job. Across Ontario, sealing a typical attic costs roughly $350 to $1,500, and the count of pot lights and other openings decides where it falls. Paired with a top-up, the combined price often runs $1.90 to $3.40 a square foot.

How it works and what it costs
Room over garage insulation warms the bedroom or bonus room above an attached garage by sealing and insulating its floor, its short side walls and the slope overhead.
How it works and what it costs
Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the rafters above a sloped or vaulted ceiling, a closed space too tight for loose fill to be spread across.

The attic insulation rebate from Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program covers a share of an attic upgrade, with the payment tied to the R-value the attic has before work begins.
How it works and what it costs
Attic insulation cost in Barrhaven depends on the attic's floor area, the depth you add, the sealing needed and whether old material comes out first.
